What is SCIL Summer Experience?

It is a 4-week smart campus innovation lab for students of any degree area.

Students will have the opportunity to work on a smart innovation project for a local client. They will be coached by our in-house experts and will present the results of their project at a Campus Innovation Conference.

Students will also have the opportunity to take part in an intensive English and intercultural communication course that will prepare them with skills that they need to be successful in international business. Students can receive up to 5 ECTS for participation in the program.


Where is SCIL Summer Experience?

SCIL is located in Tampere, the second biggest and student friendliest city of Finland.

The project work will be happening on the premises of Tampere University of Applied Sciences (TAMK).

Certification & Credits

All participants who attend the course will be awarded a Certificate of Participation.

Our SCIL Programs are accredited according to the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS).You can receive up to 5 ECTS for taking part in this program.

It is up to your home university to evaluate our courses and decide the amount of credits you will receive.

What does SCIL Cost?

Individual Application: 1860 Euros (price includes 24% VAT)

University Application: 1500 Euros per Participant (no VAT required)

The Program Fee includes teaching and coaching costs, course materials, project facilitation, cultural activities, administration fees, participation in the Campus Innovation Conference, and the use of Tampere3 universities´ facilities. It does not include accommodation, meals, travel costs or other living expenses in Tampere.



SCIL Accommodation

You are responsible for arranging your own accommodation for the duration of the program. TAMK arranged Dream Hostel option for you, as listed below. Please be careful to observe the deadlines to apply for housing.

If you choose to cancel your participation in SCIL for any reason, you are responsible to cancel your housing, as well, and subject to the terms of cancellation indicated by your housing provider.


Dream Hostel

Dream Hostel is regarded as one of the Top 10 luxury hostels in Europe. Centrally-located accommodations are available at a discounted rate until the date indicated below. Rooms and bathrooms/toilets/showers are shared. If you apply by the indicated date, you will be placed in a room with other SCIL participants. Dream Hostel provides fully equipped kitchens with free tea and coffee, but you can add a continental breakfast to the cost of your accommodation, if you like. Dream Hostel also has bicycles for rent!

Other Housing Resources

AirBnB is very active in Tampere, especially during the summer. Accommodations go quickly, so be sure to contact a host and book your accommodation as soon as possible. Note: It could be less expensive to coordinate with other SCIL participants to rent an entire apartment through AirBnB or the other options below. Opiskelijan Tampere is another resource to search for available rooms and apartments in Tampere. This is often used by students to find housing, and listings are often posted closer to the time of availability.

Am I eligible to attend the SCIL Summer program?

The level of participants usually is as follows: 2nd and 3rd year bachelor students, master and even PhD students are welcome to participate. The program welcomes students from various fields of expertise, and multi-interdisciplinarity is a very important component of SCIL programs.

What do I need to support my application?

The application process is quite simple. Applicants must submit the completed application available online.

Do I need to provide proof of proficiency in English?

The language of the program is English, and applicants are expected to be proficient in the use of English; this includes ability to speak, write, and comprehend. No certificate is required but please remember to self-evaluate your level.

Do I need to include a letter of reference with my application?

The application form asks that you provide the contact information of two referees, but it is not necessary for them to submit a written reference letter. In some cases we may contact your referees to ask them about your eligibility for the program.

When do I have to apply?

Application Deadline is February 1, 2018. You will receive your admissions decision by February 15, 2018.

There is limited space available on this program, so we encourage students to complete their applications early.

How is my application assessed?

Within 2 business days after we receive your application, you will receive a confirmation by email. An evaluation is made to determine if the program provides an appropriate challenge for applying participants. Upon acceptance, you will receive a formal letter of admission with invoice details for tuition fees.

I am a student in one of the Tampere3 university. Can I attend SCIL Summer Program?

All Tampere3 Students are welcome to participate.


What is the timetable for the programme?

This is an intensive, project-based programme.

Upon your arrival in Tampere, you will enjoy orientation activities to introduce you to the city, university, program, and your colleagues.

You will work on your project Monday – Friday, supervised by a coach. You will also take part in an English/Intercultural Communications course.

Remember that you are working with actual clients. Just like in real life, you and your team may need to work outside of regular working hours to ensure you provide the highest possible quality to your clients.

On many evenings and weekends, SCIL will offer cultural activities.

What type of clothing should I pack?

Attire in Tampere is generally quite casual. However, remember that you may be meeting clients and you will also be presenting at the Campus Innovation Conference, so it is important to dress respectfully.

Be sure to pack the appropriate clothing and shoes for outdoor activities, as well.

How Much Money Will I Spend During SCIL?

If you are applying as an individual, the price of the program is 1860 Euros (including 24% VAT)

If you are a part of a group and your university is submitting your program payment, the cost of the program is 1500 Euros.

The tuition fee includes teaching costs, course materials, cultural activities and the use of Tampere3 universities´ facilities. It does not include travel costs, accommodation, or other living expenses in Tampere, Finland. The amount of money you spend will vary on your habits and quality of life. Please see below for estimates of several basic expenses:

Local SIM card – 6-10

Monthly bus card – 35-40

Meals –  5-20 per meal

*The cost of a meal varies. You may choose to grocery shop and cook for yourself, or you may choose to purchase your meals at restaurants or at the university. At TAMK, you may purchase lunch for the discounted staff and visitor price, which is 5,80. Lunch at a restaurant can often be found for about 10, as can fast-food meals, but dinners and meals at more costly restaurants will have a higher price tag.

Cancellation & Refund Policy

After you have confirmed your place in the program, your registration is binding.

If you decide to cancel your participation in the program prior to May 31, you will receive a refund of the course fees minus the administration fee (200 Euro) and all banking fees.

After May 31, no refunds will be given. This is true regardless of the reason for cancellation, including the non-receipt of a student visa.

No refund of visa fees will be granted.

If you cancel your participation in the program, you are solely responsible to cancel your accommodation. Please refer to your accommodation provider’s cancellation policy.


Does TAMK offer any on-campus housing?

TAMK does not provide student housing, as local students live at home or in local apartments. We strongly advise you to start looking for accommodation as soon as possible; we have arranged a deal with a local hostel (deadline: March 15) and provided additional housing resources above.

Is health insurance compulsory to stay in Finland?

Health insurance is not compulsory for a short stay in Finland. However, we strongly advise participants to register to take out a private “short term study abroad” insurance in their home country.

I am a non-EU resident, can I apply?

Yes, the TAMK welcomes all nationalities in its SCIL Summer Experience.

Do I need a visa to attend the Program?

As the program is less than three months in duration, most participants can enter Finland on a tourist visa, which should be applied for by August 15. Please ensure that you have a valid passport and check the visa requirements for your country. You will receive more information about this later.

Invitation Letters for visa purposes will only be sent after payment and confirmation that funds have been received.

I do not speak Finnish, is it a problem?

You are not required to speak Finnish to take part in this program. The SCIL Summer Experience will be facilitated in English, and there are a number of English-speaking activities and services in Tampere. Tampere offers excellent opportunities for improving and practicing your English and our location provides the unique chance to become acquainted with Finnish language!

Can I bring my own laptop?

Wireless network access for laptops is available in most areas of TAMK and Tampere3 campuses. Full details of IT services will be provided upon your arrival. Please do not forget to bring a power adapter from your country to be able to plug in your laptop. TAMK will not be responsible for loss or damage to your laptop during SCIL Summer Experience.
